Good comparison of tone mapping operators

Fellow programmer/photographer Frank Dürr has created a nice comparison of tone mapping operators, many of which are available in Atlas.

This is a great resource if you’re just getting started with tone mapping and aren’t familiar with some of the eerie sounding names of the operators and their usage.

Also, here’s a photo taken last night from my balcony – tone mapped using the Ashikhmin and Reinhard ’02 operators in Atlas.

Legend of the Guardians – Trailer II

Earlier this week Warner Bros released the second trailer for Animal Logic’s epic animated feature Legend of the Guardians: The owls of Ga’Hoole.

Legend of the Guardians

We’re all working very hard to make this film the best it can be and judging by the comments online I think it’s safe to say that the public is pretty thrilled with the production quality.
I’m sure you’ll agree that it is looking rather nice… but see for yourself in the trailer.

Legend of the Guardians – Trailer

Now that the trailer is out I can finally speak about the animated feature film I’m working on here at Animal Logic.

Legend of the Guardians

“Guardians of Ga’hoole”… ahem… “Legend of the Guardians” is based on the series of novels by Kathryn Lasky and is directed by Zack Snyder of 300 and Watchmen fame.
I’m working on this film as a Look Dev TD mostly developing RenderMan shaders and other tools for use by our team of lighting artists.

Please enjoy the Legend of the Guardians trailer!

Demo Reel 2009 is online

My 2009 demo reel is up! Featuring some of my latest work and also all time favorites.

The second half of the video shows how to use Celulight and Normality to shade a 2D cel, which would be one hell of a task to do by hand but is peanuts for this powerful duo.

Paraworld is done

The cinematic for Paraworld I’ve been working on at Pendulum is finally complete and ready for viewing.

There’s also a lot of background info for those of you who are interested in that sort of stuff featured on CGSociety:

And apparently, our trailer won 1st prize for best Cut-Scene/Cinematics at the German Game Developer Awards!

Marc Antony

Another cinematic I worked on at Pendulum is done. The focus in Marc Antony is mostly on the facial animation, which was done using a really cool motion capture tool developed in-house and produced in cooperation with House of Moves.

I only did minor shading and lighting on this one, as I was stuck in Germany waiting for my visa during most of the production. Once I arrived here, there wasn’t much left for me to do… well, at least I got to watch the World Cup!

Frontlines: Fuel of War

The trailer I mentioned earlier has finally been released for public viewing by KAOS studios and Pendulum.
I present you… Frontlines: Fuel of War.

For this short clip I worked on the shading and lighting for just about every shot and also helped out in the texturing department.

NTTTB finally completed

Whew, it’s done! Now That Takes The Biscuit (NTTTB in short) is finally done! 5 weeks is truly not a long time produce a film, but somehow I’ve managed to get something out that’s (hopefully) somewhat viewable.
There’s lots and lots of things I’d have liked to improve or add, but deadlines are deadlines and at least I finished on time. Thanks to my brother Christopher’s skills on the piano, it even has a nice soundtrack that suits the plot!

The film will be premiering along with my classmate’s films next Thursday evening at the “Pulp Mansion” in Berlin, if anyone’s in town and cares to come by that would be great!

Now That Takes The Biscuit

Lots of updates! For one, the short film I’m working on has finally been named: “Now That Takes The Biscuit”. A name that reflects the story in more than one way!

Here’s just a little teaser:

Now that takes the biscuit
The production is progressing nicely, with all that’s left to do is the animation. For that I have a few more weeks, so I’ll hopefully be finished by May 20th. Both characters are rather aged and stiff, so fortunately there won’t be a lot of bouncy, hi-speed animation work for me to do. Just two old fellows sitting on a bench waiting for their train to arrive…

The character rigs on the other hand were giving me a lot of trouble, especially in areas of fine detail such as the hands and fingers. At one point I was so fed up with Final Rig that I decided to start all over with Animan, another free character rigging system. While that one isn’t perfect either, it works pretty well now. And after all, it’s free!

Now that everything else is running, I’m still not too thrilled: It seems that any time I just want to animate something, some random part will break and I’ll have to go into the character model and fix it! Hugely annoying! And not a very creative workflow at all.
