Occlusionist: FAQ

Where can I buy your software?

Sorry, my software is not available for purchase. I simply don’t have the time or resources to commercially support plug-ins on a myriad different platforms and configurations.

Please contact me if you need custom graphics software (plug-ins, shaders, etc.) developed.

Why don’t you make your software open-source?

I am a strong proponent of open source software and have contributed to various projects over the years.

However, I feel that my personal projects do not lend themselves well towards the open source model.

For example, the number of After Effects users who are also capable and willing to develop plug-ins is very small. Of this small group of people most are happily employed and probably do not have the time or motivation to work on external projects.
In fact, my plug-in Atlas has been open source under the GPL license since late 2009.  To date not a single contribution has been made nor has anyone offered to port the software to other platforms, despite strong interest in the After Effects community.

Why do you advertise your software online if most of it is not available for download?!

Simply put: I’m a computer graphics artist and software developer working a day job in the animation industry – I am not a salesman.

I don’t have the time, motivation or skills required to deal with the business aspects of selling, distributing and supporting software.

However, if you like my work you can hire my services and I will be happy to develop custom software/shaders/plug-ins according to your specifications and individual requirements.

I can’t find the download link. Is «insert software name» available for download?

Unless there is an obvious download link the software is simply not available for download.

Sorry.

Can Occlusionist replace 3D ambient occlusion renders?

I’d like to say yes, but it really depends on the usage scenario.

Screen-space ambient occlusion (SSAO) is used in many 3D games these days so it’s clearly a viable technique for production. In many cases the results are nearly indistinguishable from ray-traced ambient occlusion renders.
Of course there are other cases where a 2D approximation will not produce satisfactory results, particularly when objects are near the edges of the screen.

Does Occlusionist generate occlusion in real-time?

Not quite, but it’s close. For an HD image of average complexity Occlusionist takes about 1-2 seconds to render full screen ambient occlusion effects.

The resulting occlusion effect is comparable to ray-traced occlusion with a very high sample count (> 1024).
